A spinning top can add an element of fun and creativity to you lesson, and can be created in advance by you or even easier made by the pupils.

Resources:
Paper, ready for pupils to cut out the circles
Or ready created spinning tops

How it works:

Each section of the spinning top needs to have an activity on, these can be individual to your class or generic like blooms taxonomy. See post on Magenta Principles too...

You could for example use
  • 1.     Describe
  • 2.     Explain
  • 3.     Mind map
  • 4.     Compare and contrast
  • 5.     Draw
  • 6.     Act out
  • 7.     Teach
  • 8.     Evaluate
  •     The pupils can then use the spinning tops to discover how they are going to show their learning that lesson. This could be an on-going activity, over a series of lessons they use the spinning tops to build on their learning in different ways.
An alternative for the spinning top is each pupil could create their own spinning top based on how they best learn. By doing this the pupils can take ownership of their learning, and stretch and challenge themselves. These spinning tops could then be kept in their books and used whenever a challenge is needed.
    :
You could make spinning tops that are differentiated, so for the less able pupils it could have:
    ·       Bullet point
    ·       Mind map
    ·       Draw
    ·       Describe
    ·       Talk to the teacher
    ·       What do you think
    ·       On the 1 hand on the other hand
    ·       Key words and meanings
    ·       Or for the gifted and talented
    ·       Evaluate
    ·       Compare and contrast
    ·       Explain
    ·       Teach
    ·       Strengths and weakness
    ·       Assess
    ·       Research
    ·       Imagine

You could also have a 8 creative tasks:
    ·       Newspaper
    ·       Role play
    ·       Cartoon
    ·       1 min film
    ·       Web page
    ·       Play doh
    ·       Lego
    ·       Puppet show
         Variations:
         Use for group work
         Revision tasks
A starter of plenary spinner (like the review wheel)     This is another guest post by the fab www.twitter.com/gemmaharvey73
